  12.                     What are the geographical edges of the
  13.                networked world?  This is a peculiar question,
  14.                with a constantly varying answer.  Here's what
  15.                I've found.  If you know more, please let me know.

  17.           1.  South
  18.  
  19.           In the book, *The Matrix*, I mentioned that the U.S. Palmer,
  20.           Siple, and South Pole stations exchanged mail with the
  21.           Matrix by way of Kermit over a satellite link to a NASA
  22.           machine in Florida.  This arrangement is still in place for
  23.           the South Pole station, making it clearly the most southerly
  24.           networked place in the world, at 90 degrees south.
  25.           Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station does not have a permanent
  26.           link, and does not use the usual protocols of networks like
  27.           the Internet, UUCP, FidoNet, or BITNET, but mail is
  28.           exchanged with the Matrix.
  29.  
  30.                The AQ DNS domain for Antarctica was registered in
  31.           March 1992 by New Zealand, specifically by their Department
  32.           of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR).  DSIR has a
  33.           permanent satellite link to Scott Base on Ross Island.  They
  34.           run IP over that link, and it is routed with the Internet.
  35.           But apparently it isn't configured for international access;
  36.           I can't reach it from here.

  38.                However, two kilometers away is the U.S. McMurdo base.
  39.           McMurdo was first connected to the Internet in about
  40.           February 1992.  Apparently there was some problem with
  41.           200mph winds during Antarctic winter, but McMurdo has been
  42.           up solidly since at least December 1992 (Antarctic summer).
  43.           That's about 78S 166E.
  44.  
  45.                It is rumored that Australia has a link to their
  46.           Antarctic base to Hobart, Tasmania, but it is apparently not
  47.

  52.           routed with the rest of the Internet.

  54.                Other countries are also considering Internet
  55.           connections from Antarctica, and some may be up already.
  56.  
  57.                There are no FidoNet, UUCP, or BITNET sites in
  58.           Antarctica that I know of.
  59.  
  60.                The southernmost networked place *not* in Antarctica
  61.           appears to be Hobart, Tasmania, which has UUCP, FidoNet, and
  62.           Internet connections.  There is no BITNET in Australia or
  63.           New Zealand.
  64.  
  65.           2.  North
  66.  
  67.           The northernmost networked place in the world is harder to
  68.           discover, because there are so many contenders.
  69.  
  70.                Most northerly appears to be a node on the NASA Science
  71.           Network (part of the Internet), in Thule, Greenland, at
  72.           77 40N 69 0W.  There are a few towns farther north than
  73.           that, in Greenland, on Ellesmere Island, in Svalbard, and in
  74.           Franz Josef's Land, but they don't seem to be networked.

  76.                Second most northerly appears to be a PC clone running
  77.           Waffle on the North Slope of Alaska, in Atqasuk:
  78.           70 28 10N 157 23 45W.  This is a bit hard to discover, since
  79.           the UUCP map listing for it has 70 28N 157 23N.  Unless this
  80.           node is run by Santa Claus, it's hard to believe it is north
  81.           of the North Pole.  This host is really connected using the
  82.           WWIVnet protocols.  Other than Atqasuk, the northernmost
  83.           networked place in the United States is apparently
  84.           Fairbanks, Alaska.

  86.                The most northerly Canadian hosts appear to be in the
  87.           Northwest Territories.  There are two on FidoNet.  The most
  88.           northerly is the one in Rankin Inlet, 62 30N 93 0W.  The
  89.           other is in Yellowknife.  There is a UUCP host in
  90.           Yellowknife, as well.  That's 62 27 43N 114 26 04W.  The
  91.           most northerly Yukon host appears to be on FidoNet, in
  92.           Whitehorse, at 60 43N 135 03W.

  94.                There is one site in Greenland that I can't locate:
  95.           Edgedesminde.  That may be way north.  However, Nuuk is on
  96.           FidoNet, at 64 10N 51 35W.
  97.  
  98.                Iceland is farther north, and Kopasker appears to be
  99.           the most northerly site in Iceland, with both Internet and
  100.           UUCP connections, at 66 20 30N 16 29 30W.  Reykjavik is only
  101.           a few degrees farther south, and has UUCP, FidoNet, BITNET,
  102.           and Internet connections, at 64 08 35N 21 57 35W.

  104.                Norway: Tromsoe, with Internet and FidoNet connections,

  110.           at 69 40N 18 50E.  This is also the site of the most
  111.           northerly networked university in the world.
  112.  
  113.                Sweden: Lulea, with FidoNet, UUCP, and Internet
  114.           connections, at 65 35 22N 22 10 00E.
  115.  
  116.                Finland: Oulu, with Internet, BITNET, and FidoNet
  117.           connections, at 65 13 00N 25 19 00E.
  118.  
  119.                In Russia, Murmansk doesn't seem to be networked, but
  120.           Sverodvinsk and Archangelsk are, around 64 34N 39 50E, on
  121.           FidoNet.  Then there is Komi, on UUCP, at
  122.           63 33 00N 53 38 00E; Petrozavodsk, Karelia, also on UUCP, at
  123.           61 47N 34 20E; Ivanovo, on FidoNet, at 60 32N 36 22E; and
  124.           eventually St. Petersburg, on most networks, at
  125.           59 55N 30 15E.

  127.           3.  West
  128.  
  129.           Westernmost doesn't mean much on a round planet, but the
  130.           networked place farthest west in longitude from Greenwich is
  131.           Hawaii, with Honolulu at more than 157 degrees west.
  132.           Exactly which town on which island is the westernmost
  133.           networked is unclear.

  135.           4.  East
  136.  
  137.           Easternmost from Greenwich is Fiji, where the Department of
  138.           Mathematics of the University of the South Pacific in Suva,
  139.           at 18 6S 178 30E, has a UUCP link to New Zealand.  Then
  140.           there are various places in New Zealand, such as Wellington,
  141.           which is connected to most networks except BITNET, at
  142.           41 17 25S 174 46 07E.  Christchurch is also far east,
  143.           followed by Port-Vila, Vanuatu, on the RIO UUCP network, at
  144.           17 44S 168 19E.  Then there is Scott Station (NZ),
  145.           Antarctica, on the Internet; Noumea, New Caledonia, on RIO;
  146.           and McMurdo Station (US), Antarctica, on the Internet, all
  147.           between 166 and 167 degrees east.

  149.                Gold Coast, Queensland, is probably the easternmost
  150.           networked place in Australia, on FidoNet, at 28 04S 153 25E.
  151.           Australia being one of the most networked places in the
  152.           world, many other Australian locations follow.
  153.  
  154.                Russia's easternmost networked outpost appears to be
  155.           Magadan, north of the Sea of Okhotsk, and at the end of the
  156.           road from the west, with both FidoNet, and UUCP, at
  157.           59 34N 150 48E.  There appears to be nothing on the
  158.           Kamchatka Peninsula, or farther east.  Sakhalin Island is on
  159.           the map, with UUCP.

  161.                Guam's easternmost networked point is on FidoNet, at
  162.

  167.           13 29 02N 144 48 23E.
  168.  
  169.                The easternmost networked place in the Land of the
  170.           Rising Sun is Kushiro, Hokaido, Japan, on the Internet, at
  171.           42 58N 144 23E.  Sapporo follows soon after, with Internet
  172.           and UUCP connections.
